It shouldn’t come as a surprise that a culture breeding geeks, artists, and activists would give rise to techies who use art to communicate searing social and political statement. On Thursday, July 15, 7pm-midnight, at START Soma Gallery, 672 South Van Ness, a collective of artists open their aptly named show, Underfoot, in a smart face-off of contemporary thoughts and belief systems. In these frightening times, traditional heavy-handed political art cannot compete with increasing media and cultural complexity. More challenging and multi-layered creations are required. This show, using this new model of political art, is a logical product of the Bay Area’s collision of art, technology, and social activism.

In a unique gesture intended to break down social barriers of the "digital divide," artist participants of Underfoot and START Soma Gallery will be donating proceeds from the $5 entry donation to CAMINOS Pathways Learning Center. CAMINOS Pathways Learning Center provides computer education and employment opportunities to low-income, immigrant women of the Bay Area

The art of Underfoot is as diverse as the Mission itself. Pieces run the gamut of interactive, video, kinetic and sculptural. Topics covered include the ramifications of electronic voting, the interplay between pedestrians and panhandlers, and the construction of media sound bites, among many others. The show is aimed at both the politically-minded and the technically-oriented tribes of San Francisco, who sadly don't realize the potential power of technologically-based art to effect change. Underfoot seeks to bridge this gap, and to inspire dialogue between these two groups. The artists and technologists of Underfoot are all Bay Area residents, committed to affecting the world and their community through their art.

About CAMINOS: CAMINOS was founded in 1999 to create economic opportunities for low-income Latina immigrants and provide them with an entrÈe into the information revolution that is now fundamentally changing the Bay Area, the nation and the world's economic and social structures. CAMINOS Pathways Learning Center uses computers to provide educational and employment opportunities to low-income, immigrant women of the Bay Area. CAMINOS staff and volunteers provide tuition-free education and job training opportunities for women limited by low literacy, poverty and inadequate English language skills.

About START Soma: START Soma is an upstart art gallery that was founded upon three very simple ideals: promote emerging artists, sell original art, and make it affordable.
