Baryshnikov Arts Center Fellowships
This pilot project will begin to develop inter-disciplinary residencies for advanced students and recent alumni of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and may ultimately be expanded to other educational institutions. In the winter of 2005, three creative teams of 2-6 artists each were selected by a committee, which consisted of NYU faculty and staff, Baryshnikov and BAC's artistic panel.
In June and July 2005, each inter-disciplinary team will work from two to six weeks at BAC with a mentor chosen by BAC's staff. The mentors,
experienced artists in one or more fields, may be active in the same discipline(s) as their protégées or they may be from other mediums in
order to promote a cross disciplinary exchange of ideas - allowing the fellow to see the work from a new perspective. Each artistic team will
receive a production grant and each artist will receive a stipend.
At the end of the residency, the team will have the opportunity to showcase the work to receive additional critical input. The BAC and Tisch staffs and the participating artists and mentors will evaluate the program and make the necessary changes for subsequent seasons.
The 2005 BAC Fellowship recipients are: playwright/lyricist Rachel Sheinkin and composer Nils Olaf Dolven (both from the Musical Theatre Department) who will be developing a musical titled /Serenade/ with BAC artist, choreographer Benjamin Millipied; playwright Anton Dudley (Dramatic Writing Department) who will be developing a new play /Flight of Kings/ with Cuban director Javier Guiterrez and playwright Edwin Sanchez as mentor; and Beliz Dermircioglu and Jamie Allen (Dance/Interactive Technology Department) who will be creating a new dance work, which uses live motion tracking and processed video controlled by an artist offstage, creating a dialogue between the expressions of the dancer on stage and the visual environment that is created by the artist offstage. The mentor for this project will be choreographer Tere O'Connor.
