The Body Electric

H79.2782   Lecture   4 Credits
Instructor(s): Barcia-Colombo, Hartman

In 1974, Marina Abramovic stood in a gallery space for six hours leaving instructions to those who entered to use one of 72 objects (including a rose, an axe and scissors)  on her body in any way they wished. Vitto Acconci documented, through photos and text his daily exercise routine of stepping on and off a chair for as long as possible over several months. The body has always been an important tool in the creation of art. The Body Electric is a summer workshop in which students study the body as sensor, display, controller and ultimately performance tool through a series of workshops in physical computing, wearable electronics, costume and live media processing. The class culminates in individual and/or group performances that combine body art, media and technology in support of storytelling.
